Have you ever gone somewhere or done something even though a part of you said NO! Don’t! Then, you promptly regret your decision. How many times have you ignored the part of yourself that speaks to you in whispers, an uncomfortable feeling, or simply a sense of knowing? Last week I wrote about how we have learned to ignore our bodies and just push through our bodily sensations, this week I want to discuss how we ignore our intuition. There is a difference between intuition and fear, but how do you tell the difference? Here are some steps for you to tap into your intuition and know when it is guiding you. As Oprah once said, your guidance starts as a whisper and it gets louder and louder, if you keep ignoring it, it will bonk you on the head (OK so I am paraphrasing, but she did say something like that).
- Quiet your Mind. Our mind is constantly going, daily, minute-by-minute. Our thoughts run a mile a minute and a lot of these thoughts are helpful, some are just mindless chatter that drowns out our intuitive voice. Spend a minute just breathing and noticing your thoughts, pay attention to how that voice sounds. Those voices are not your intuition. Most of them are your conscious mind; your intuition is your subconscious mind guiding you. One way to recognize your intuition is to focus on your regular internal voice so you can discern a difference.
- Examine your past. Think back to a time in your life when you paid attention or didn’t pay attention to your sense of knowing. Remember the outcome, how did you feel? How did that voice come to you? The answer is different for everyone, remembering how it came to you in the past will help you recognize it in the future.
- Tap into your inner artist. When you need to make a decision and your thoughts are swimming, when you are done writing pros/cons lists, and still can’t decide, tap into your inner artist. Do something totally unrelated to your decision. What do you enjoy doing? Drawing? Coloring? Painting? Finger painting? Dancing? Do something creative so that you can tap into your intuition and get away from your ego. Then you can go back to make the decision that resonates with you the most.
I hope these steps help you tap into your inner knowing and intuition. It serves as a guide with no strings attached; it is truly for your highest and best good.
