    A coach is someone that helps clients discover what they need to change in their lives and helps them move towards creating the life of their dreams. We are inherently made to interact and live in communities. Often our survival is based on relying on others. In today’s world we no longer have the support systems of the past in order. This is where coaches come in. Coaches step in to show individuals how to move beyond their own limitations. As with any profession coaches can focus on different aspects of change.  If you are thinking about looking for a coach to help you in an area of your life, search for someone that not only specializes in your area and who would you feel comfortable working with. Being comfortable with your coach is essential. You will be sharing personal aspects of your life with this person, so make sure you are totally at ease with your new coach. Many coaches offer an introductory session or free consultation; take advantage of these sessions to find your best match.

    Why are Coaches important?

    A coach is your advisor and guide. Great coaches empower you to move forward with your life, clarify what you want, and guide you as you take action to fulfill your goals. Even individuals that are able to take action steps and create change in their own life encounter roadblocks that they just can’t seem to move past. Coaches are here to help you.

    Coaches vs. Therapists

    Coaches are not therapists. Therapy deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or in relationships. The focus is often on resolving difficulties arising from the past that hamper an individual’s emotional functioning in the present, improving overall psychological functioning, and dealing with the present in more emotionally healthy ways. Coaching, on the other hand, supports personal and professional growth based on self-initiated change in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes. These outcomes are linked to personal or professional success. Coaching is future focused. While positive feelings/emotions may be a natural outcome of coaching, the primary focus is on creating actionable strategies for achieving specific goals in one’s work or personal life.     A simple way to think about coaches is to compare them to coaches for sports. The coach guides the athlete to the correct actions, but it is the athlete’s job to train and follow through. Likewise, a coach cannot make  changes in your life for you, but can guide you in the direction to fulfilling your dreams.
