    A couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog with 7 ways to increase your happiness. As promised, each week, I am going to discuss in more detail each of the 7 ways.

    The first technique or method that I mentioned to increase your happiness was volunteering or giving back. I know you have heard this before. How much time a week/month or year do you spend giving back or volunteering? No matter where you are, if you are fortunate enough to be able to read this you are in a place in your life where you can give back and serve somehow. When I say the word “volunteer” most people think of volunteering at a food bank or hospital. These are great options, but I invite you to be more creative. Think about what skills you have and can contribute to your local community. For instance, say your are really good at and enjoy dancing. What if you taught dance to kids or adults who want to learn but just don’t have the resources to take a dance class? If you are a lover of dance you know how much joy it can bring to someone’s life. As you all know, joy spreads. Some mothers are able to spend some time volunteering at their kids’ school. If this is fulfilling for you great! Look within yourself and find one thing that you want to share with the world.

    There are also many other ways to help another that may not be officially volunteering. What about random acts of kindness? How about buying an extra cup of coffee for your coworker who you know likes coffee? These are just a couple of ideas. I am sure you can come up with a big list if you put your mind to it. What if you committed to doing one nice thing a day for someone? How do you think that would impact you or others around you. Commit to doing something that takes a little extra effort. If you choose to do this, take an inventory of how you feel when you are finished with your task. At the end of the week, ask yourself, how do you feel compared to the end of last week? What impact has your efforts had on you and others?

    My challenge to you is to try at least one of my suggestions or come up with your own. There are so many studies proving that happiness is increased if we help others. You can choose to volunteer or simply give back through small daily acts.
