Have you ever found yourself in a place where you need to make a decision but just can’t decide. When you are in the place of indecision and stay in that place, you are making a decision! Your decision is to stay on the fence to stay in the place of indecision. For me I know that when I can’t decide something, and obsess about the dilemma the answer does not just come to me. I have found that these steps help me to discern the voices of others from my own inner voice.
1. Step away from the issue.
Take some time and step away from the dilemma. Do something creative or different. Work on a different project or take a walk. The purpose is take your focus off of the problem so that you can come back to it with a new perspective.
2. Meditate
For those of you that do meditate, spend five to ten minutes meditating through. If you are not a meditator one simple way to focus your mind is to take some deep breaths. Breathe In.. Hold your breath.. Breathe out.. Do this for 10 or more breaths.
3. Free Writing
Write whatever comes to you. Take out a piece of paper or your journal and just write. Let all your thoughts come out about the problem. Allow your thoughts to flow freely.
At this point if the decision has become clear to you, you can stop here. If you are still not sure, do the following:
4. Write a pros/cons list.
Divide a piece of paper in half. On the top of each side write your choices. Then write the pros leave some space and the cons. While doing this don’t overthink it, just write whatever comes. When you feel like this is complete then you can stop. Now take a look. Which side has more pros? Less cons?
Hopefully, after following the steps above you have made your decision. If you are still undecided I urge you to decide that there is no right answer. Remember not making a decision is also decision. Decide if you should just act, or you need another day to think. Either way make a commitment that you are going to make a decision.
