Do you often set goals for yourself and then eventually give up before you reach your goals?

Now that we are in the middle of a global pandemic do you find it harder to take the action that is necessary for you to reach your goals?

If you are feeling this way you are not alone. The toll of the shelter in place, uncertainty, and fear contributes to lower energy.  The inner conflict between taking action and just wanting to stay safe inside watching TV can be a constant battle.

In addition, you may be feeling like it is time to re-examine what you thought was important or even what you want to focus on.  This pause is an opening for you to do just that, and it is also a time to make sure you are being kind to yourself.

How to Reach your Goals: Acknowledge what you really want

Taking action and going inward can feel equally important and lead to confusion as to which way to go. If you are an HSP or heart-centered/intuitive individual you will feel these effects of fear/isolation at a deeper level. For the introverts, the time alone is easy to an extent. Even introverts need to be around people. Also, some introverts are at home with multiple people and can’t seem to get any time alone to go inward. For extroverts, who are energized by being around others, the isolation is de-motivating and depletes energy.

Given all these circumstances and energies what can you do? How do we increase our energy, motivation, and reach our goals? The first consideration is how to measure goals?

Acknowledge the Feelings. Pretending that this isn’t happening is not the solution, in order to make any shifts or changes we first need to recognize where we are right now. Denial, soothing or numbing does not change anything. Take one minute right now and write the answer to the following questions:  “How do you really feel right now and in the last week/month?”  and “How would you like to feel?”

Know what you really want. Now you know how you really feel, take a look at what you really want to accomplish in the next 30 days, and the next 90 days. Write it all down. What are your goals, choose how you want to feel in addition to the outer tangible goals. If you aren’t sure about what you want, see my blog on how to make aligned decisions to help you decide.

How to Reach your Goals: Set realistic goals? What is a realistic goal?

Once you decide what you want you must make your goals attainable. If they are not then you will be easily discouraged. For example, if you want to start meditating, then you may set the goal to meditate for 20 minutes every day. If you set that goal, ask yourself if that is easy for you to accomplish, do you have the time/energy/motivation to go from not meditating at all to 20 minutes a day. For some that is very attainable, for 5 minutes for 5 days is more attainable.

Really check in with yourself to see what is realistic but a little bit of a stretch. Set the goal and then do the following.

Rest and Rejuvenate. Nature provides different seasons and energetic changes around us on purpose. If we pay attention to the seasons it can be a guide to be in touch with what we need. If you need more time to read, or take baths, or engaging in spiritual practices then take the time to schedule these activities.  In addition, add your needs to your goals list.  Accept and allow the fact that there are times of the year where we rest more, where we are outside more, when we need more sleep and when we are more inward.

Focus your energy. Take a look at your goals and pick three that you want to focus on in the next few months. Then break down your goals into action steps that can take less than one hour. Remember to make your goals attainable to keep you motivated and on track.

Schedule time: Plug these action steps into your calendar.

Track your progress: Make sure you include weekly or monthly check-ins to track your progress. You can make this fun by using gold stars, stickers or other creative ways to celebrate your progress.

Coaches tip: Now plugin time for rejuvenation, especially if it wasn’t one of your top three goals.

    Rinse, Repeat, Choose Consciously

You have a choice every moment and every day, you can fight your energy and mood or you can use them as a guide to give yourself what you need. I want to be clear that I am not advocating that you hide indefinitely or that you don’t take any action steps, I am saying choose what is important and focus on those action steps in a way that is aligned with you and your energy.

Know that you may lose motivation and making progress is the goal, not perfection. Be kind to yourself, things are changing rapidly, celebrate any progress.
